Its not often Luton is noted for anything bar the airport and maybe a forgotten slice of society but the guys from School of Unthink, a Luton based collective of artists and musicians, have successfully for two days at least, transformed a small section of the high street in to an all out expression of rebellion or perhaps a reflection of life in Luton.
Dislocation festival takes place in The Old Shop, HQ for the now renowned Film Stock festival, and resembles someone’s living room with a good selection of comfortable couches and a tea and cake stall. Taking up residence in the corner is a stage due to grace some of Lutons finest experimental musicians as well as noise makers from around the UK and Ireland. The day encompasses a full glorious 12 hours of all colours of the Noise spectrum, with audiences of all ages coming in and out of the Old Shop in waves all day. Standing, sitting or dozin' in the couches the audiences were largely appreciative for the sounds they where presented with. Highlights included Black Carrot, strung out jazz punks, Same Actors sitar driven electronica, Scotlands Wounded Knee music to waltz and clap your hands too and N,Nminus filthy noiseniks from the emerald isle. It was only magic and such a cool laid back vibe, and all for 5 pounds for the whole day. Alcohol was cheaply supplied by the off-licence across the street with a BYOB policy in full effect. Its clear the guys behind The School of Unthink/Dislocation are not doing this for the financial gain, their doing it for the love of art and music and that’s something that’s refreshing in this day and age. Have a listen to next weeks show for a full report on what went down at Dislocation 09.
