< Back to the Blog main pageParis’s Rockabilly Scene

This blog has been written by Marjorie, our Paris based guru. She's currently unable to lift her hands to post it herself, due to too many mince pies. Don't worry, she'll be back to normal in a day or two!
As France’s wrongly named King of Rock Johnny Hallyday, is in the midst of a coma in Los Angeles, let’s take a look at some decent French music inspired from America. Step up France’s surf and Rockabilly scene which has been growing over the past few years with bands such as The Cavaliers and Tu Seras Terriblement Gentille, to small record and clothes stores and small kitsh bar’s where many of the bands perform. Most of these leather, leopard print, quiffs and 45 ridden haunts are dotted around the Bastille area where the record store Born Bad/ Exotica caters to the taste of punk, Swing, blues Soul and so much more you’ll have to come to Paris yourselves to dirty your hands going through the record boxes. Born Bad is also a small label which has signed the afore mentioned bands as well as Magnetix , Cheveu and is behind the 60’s gem-tastic Wizz compilations. The bands tend to be on stage at The Méchanique Ondulatoire, Le Plastique, Le Petit Garage and at the Motorpsycho events in Glazart’ North East of Paris a fabulous venue in the middle of nowhere which usually caters Drum’n bass Electro nights. If you are a bit more of a Mod you should head to Pigalle to the Ne Nous Fachons Pas (after the French 60s film) where you can chill to some real R’b and perv on local on small unknown off duty rockstars. So when Johnny Hallyday ends up leaving this fine world… I’ll be cutting myself off from the French media… I know they’ll be treating the event like MJs death, hence I shall be filling my ears with proper US influenced French rock music. |
