Since German Thomas Haferlach and friends set a new party at Rua Augusta in early 2009, geeks, gays, nerds, and all kind of alternative people found a place like any other to hang out and party in downtown São Paulo. There was already some nice parties going on such as Taco Bells, Odara et al, but nothing that could combine the alternative mood of European squat parties with some kind of naivety, avoidance of poser behaviour and great Dj sets. The expression would be attitude towards party. Voodoohop started at a pool dance bar - just like many others at rua Augusta. The place then inhabited by those interested in taking a ride on the wild side was now home for a laid back and vigorous dancing crew. Bar do Netão became famous, the party became bigger and bigger and was finally relocated to some broaden spaces such as the refurbished “A Casa do Diretor Pornô” (literally Porn Movie Director home) and at last at an empty building at São João Street, in the  abandoned downtown São Paulo - home for the zombie crack cokain addicts. Parties would now run every week - and sometimes twice a week! First edition would take place at a small venue and them on Saturdays at the big São João’s Avenue place, with its long corridors and thematic rooms. The party for the then craziest became the party for students, tourists and journalists as well and was joined by international brands such as Vice Magazine for some customized projects, and then… Well, the saddest had just happened last weekend when the party welcomed a writer from Brazilian major news paper Folha de São Paulo. After an honouring title. “Party resists to the ‘boredom” of São Paulo night life” the piece focused mainly on things like “the party has been happening without the consent of the council” and for disrespect the ban on indoors legislation – in place in São Paulo since 2009. In fact, the whole story will eventually raise even more attention (aka money) to the party. The next had been already announced and got the ironic subtitle “Press Conference”. After having his facebook and orkut profiles announced in the party page on Facebook, the writer became object of bulling and has given up allowing people checking his profile pictures.  It has been announced that the next party will be located in a secret location. The brand new toilets inaugurated last Saturday will be let off for a while. But if the police or major authorities show up, we may have testified a live assassination of one of the most innovative and countercultural parties São Paulo had in the recent years. Blame it on it’s own success.
