It was another great non stop musical week in São Paulo. On Tuesday Londoner emergent We Have Band performed for insiders at Hot Hot during their first South American tour. "I'm not sure who brought us here" confessed me Darren Bancroft. On Wednesday Cat Power was superb at Bourbon Street in her third and last gig of a killing tour. "I love this country... I love our country", she corrected rapidily to a devoted but sometimes distracted audience. On Thursday Scottish Camera Obscura went on stage at Studio SP and Bebel Gilberto performed from Friday to Sunday at Sesc Pompéia. However, no other event was more expected than the launching of Tulipa Ruiz debut album yesterday (31st) at Auditório Ibirapuera.
Tulipa was born in a family of musicians. Her brother Gustavo Ruiz took part in a dozen of independent projects in São Paulo in the recent years. Their father, the guitar player Luiz Chagas is a key figure in Brazilian Popular Music and is part of Banda Isca de Polícia that accompanied the genius of Itamar Assumpção till his death in 2003. This band was part of Vanguarda Paulistana movement, alongside Arrigo Barnabé and Tetê Spíndola in early 1980’s. Tulipa’s voice is often compared to Gal Costa, which doesn't do it any justice. Others try to compare it to Tete Spindola's with a similar result. Spindola's voice is totally unique-It stands alone. She is without a doubt one of the most creative artist of an entire generation of Brazilian singers and songwriters. Her performance at Virada Cultural (an annual São Paulo’s cultural festival that takes place downtown for 24 hours) was a preview of what she is capable of and what is to come in future. Yesterday over a 100 people queued up, searching for tickets to see her at Ibirapuera Park. The concert was sold out. Nothing any critics say could ever beat that. |
